ICA launches the new Group on Sex-Affective & Gender Diversity

In March 2024 the ICA General Secretariat, leaded by Carlos Serrano Vásquez, launched the idea of creating a working group about sex-affective and gender diversity (SAGD) archives and archivists.

The group started working in the elaboration of an Initial Statement Document to define the sense, missions and goals of the Group. After two months of meetings and discussions, the final version of the initial document and the whole group were presented in a webinar held Thursday, June 27th.

With the document, we could enjoy also with the presentation of three initiatives related to LGBTQ+ archives & archivists worldwide. Alejandro de la Fuente began the pannel presenting Yeguas del Apocalipsis (Apocalypse's Mares), a digital archive resuming the life and work of Pedro Lemebel, a key figure in art and politics in Chile in the last quarter of the 20th century.

The second one, Big Tata Paris, was presented by Sam Bourcier. Big Tata defines itself as the first network of LGBTQIA+ Libraries and Archives that brings together associations and collectives in France, Switzerland and Canada. The network is administered by the association Mémoires minoritaires and run collectively by all the members.

To close the pannel, Karina and Beau Newham talked us about the work developed by Queer Indonesia Archive (QIA), a transnational digital archiving project based in Jakarta and Melbourne that brings us the vibrant reality of LGBTQ+ community in Indonesia.

These are only three examples of the vitality we can found in the universe of archives related to SAGD people and associations. The Sex-Affective & Gender Diversity Archives & Archivists Working Group of the International Council on Archives (ICA-SAGDAA-WG) wants to be an open partner and an useful help to build a solid network of researchers, practitioners, users, activists and archivists that are interested, as do other similar entities, like the Diverse Sexuality & Gender Section of the Society of American Archivists (SAA-DSGS), or the LGBTQ Users Special Interest Group of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA-LGBTQ+SIG). With this step, ICA has the intention of align the UN resolutions against attacks and repression on the sex and gender minorities all over the world, as stated by ICA's President last June.

The launching of PLEXUS, a blog & newsletter space to share, comment and communicate about the Group's work, is the next step in ICA-SAGDAA-WG path defining the resources and services the Group wants to offer to the SAGD Archives & Archivists community.

If you missed the webinar, or you were there, but want to revisit the presentations, you can access the recording at ICA's Youtube channel.
